Spring Hike and Rafting

The early rains did little to dampen the spirits of the 11 Royal Rangers who participated in the 2008 Spring Hike. The trip started at Hog Pen Gap ( we didn't see the pen but we did see the wild hogs later on the trip!) and ended at Dicks Creek. The highlite of the trip included a 12 mile day up and over beautiful Trey Mountian. The "Stone Soup" that evening may have been the best trail meal ever. Everyone was give a traditional trail name with a few examples being Gnat, Shelter Mouse, Undreroo and King of the Hill.

You"ll have to fine someone who was on the trip to divulge the identity of the ones above. Two of the three days were perfect hiking weather. We met and hiked with people from around the world who were setting out to make it to Maine by the fall. We decided that 31 miles was enough and that we could not finish the 2174 miles of the Appalachian Trail before spring break was over so we got on the bus and decided to go rafting.

Rafting the Nantahala River is always a great journey. Twenty eight Rangers and MPact girls braved the icy waters on a beautiful spring afternoon. Everyone made it over Nantahala Falls with some ending the trip wetter than others. At the end of the day, no one was sad that they had chosen to spend some of their break hiking and rafting.
